Since 2019, the Older Adult Services department at Jewish Family Service has been quietly transforming the way older adults in the Jewish community are able to access support, connection, and care.
The department was created when JFS recognized that case management alone was not enough. Connecting older adults to services and resources to address emotional, financial, and physical challenges did not address the gap in their connection to the Jewish community. In response, JFS identified a clear need for programming designed specifically for Jewish older adults.
Older Adult Case Manager, Carah Tenzer, LSW, serves as the first point of contact. She works directly with community members, initially meeting them in their homes to better understand their needs in a comfortable and familiar setting. Conversations focus on everything from activities of daily living to social interests. From there, Carah works collaboratively with each person to identify next steps for connection to resources and programs.
“I can spend hours thinking about a community member and trying to come up with ideas, programs, or resources that might support them,” Tenzer said. “My goal is to ensure people can remain independent in their homes for as long as possible.”
Over the past 7 years, JFS has developed a roster of programs that promote connection and emotional well-being. Programs include social and creative offerings facilitated by staff member Carol Wilson, LSW, with the support of JFS volunteers. From music-based gatherings like Musical Memories to hands-on activities like Creative Connections, participants engage at their own comfort level with no special skills required. In addition, Mazel Meals provides Shabbat and holiday meals that bring a sense of celebration and engagement with JFS each month.
The impact of Older Adult Services cannot be overstated. As one family member shared, “The staff and volunteers became a true extended family. We are grateful to all who give their time, compassion, and energy to offer emotional, physical, and spiritual support to our mom.”
Through individualized support and community-based programming, JFS continues to ensure that older adults receive not only the care they need, but also a deep sense of connection and belonging.
